Rita L. Tapia (Schmidt), 92, entered eternal life Wednesday, January 20, 2010 at Wesley Glen Health Center. Born January 18, 1918 in Columbus, OH, Preceded in death by parents George and Anna Schmidt, 7 siblings and husband James C. Tapia. Survived by children, James (Linda) Tapia of Northport, FL, Melinda (Michael) O'Donnell of Estero, FL, Deborah (Stephen) Roof of Westerville; 10 grandchildren; 8 great-grandchildren; and her sister, Anna Smith. Graduate of 1935 class of South High School; remained involved in class alumni activities, serving on the Planning Committees for the 25th, 50th, 60th, and 70th Reunions. Attended Franklin University Business School. Retired from R.G. Barry Corporation as Executive Assistant to Corporate C.E.O.; represented Barry in their founding membership in the Columbus Chapter of Executive Women International. Rita spent the last 10 years at Wesley Glen taking a leadership role in several activities. She was secretary of the Resident Council for five years and enjoyed composing stories and free verse for the publications, "Creations from the Glen". Many of her stories were based on the Schmidt family, which she added to the family genealogy. Sewing and quilting were also her favorite activities. Memorial Service will be held 2 p.m. on February 6, 2010 in the Longworth Auditorium at Wesley Glen Community, 5155 N. High Street, Columbus, OH 43214. Contributions may be made to the Wesley Glen Charitable Care Fund.
